Before you commission the work
What to ask a service company
This page is not a directory of contractors and deliberately recommends no one. It is a list of questions worth asking before you sign — because most refit disputes come not from the quality of the work but from the scope, materials and handover never being put in writing. The answers to these five questions are easier to compare between firms than prices are.
- What exactly is the scope of work, the starting condition and the expected result?
- Which materials, coating systems or parts will be used, and are they suitable for the boat?
- Does the quotation separate labour, materials, extra work and the conditions for approving it?
- What is the schedule, the handover point and how will progress be documented?
- Who is responsible for the boat during the work, and what are the warranty or complaint terms?
First get to know the technical scope from the guides, then ask the chosen company for a written work plan.
